Supplementary Post: The Movies We've Seen This Year, Ranked

Now that I've watched all of this year's movies (except Wreck-It Ralph, which I'm going to watch after writing this, but I've already seen it before so I can appropriately judge it), I'm going to rank the films.  Not by preference (I've already made my top 10 Disney movie list) but by how progressive they are—both for race, gender, and portrayal of villains.  So here we go:

8. Pocahontas
No arguments here.  Despite my post defending the movie, Disney definitely could have done a better job.

7. Cinderella
Cinderella needs to fix her own life instead of flitting around until a prince swoops in and saves her.  I have a very large problem with this film, as illustrated by my sarcasm in this post.

She literally can't stop primping for more than five seconds.

6. The Lion King
Okay, I can see where people think this film is racist—and to some extent, I agree.  Just not to the degree some people have argued.

5. The Little Mermaid
Another movie in which the plot revolves around a girl falling in love with a guy she just met.  Pretty cliché.

4. The Princess and the Frog
I actually tend to think this movie is pretty progressive.  Of course, as shown here, it still has its problems.

3. Frozen
Pretty progressive, but not as much as some of Disney's other films.  Also, I just don't have Frozen fever.

2. Wreck-It Ralph
I think this film does a great job of analyzing Disney's past image of villains—something no other Disney movie has done.  Props to them.

1. Zootopia
This movie was so successful because it was so progressive, and I love the interesting, fresh plot layered with important messages.
